COLLECTING WITH HILARY JASCHKE

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START COLLECTING ART?

I’ve never thought of myself as an art collector, but am flattered! I guess that is what happens as you accumulate pieces you love over the years. My mom and maternal grandmother both oil paint, which was probably my earliest exposure to art.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST ARTWORK THAT YOU PURCHASED?

The first real piece of artwork we purchased was a moody oil painting of San Francisco in the rain. I love it. We passed it in a gallery, couldn’t stop thinking about it, went back and purchased it.

WHAT IS THE MAIN MOTIVATION BEHIND YOUR COLLECTING?

I want to fill my home with pieces that are meaningful and make me happy.

WHEN DID YOU ACQUIRE A MARGARET CHEATHAM WILLIAMS ART WORK?

I could do this math based on a friend’s baby shower that was held in her gallery, but a few years ago! I fell in love with this large format photograph she took on her honeymoon.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT SPECIFIC PIECE/ PIECES?

It has movement, she captures light so beautifully, it’s somewhere I’ve never been, but feels familiar. I’ll let her tell the story of when she took the picture, but it sounds like it was taken during a fun memory on her honeymoon and I love knowing that.

WHICH MEDIUM DO YOU PRIMARILY COLLECT?

Photography, oil, and I love watercolor. Inslee Farris is a favorite as well. She did a piece for our daughter’s nursery of a bison with a cute little bird and it is strong, yet sweet and feminine. We both attended the same university and she is incredibly talented.

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL FOR YOUR COLLECTION?

Fill our home with pieces from places we love by people we love.

DO YOU COLLECT A SPECIFIC STYLE OR FROM A CERTAIN DECADE?

Nope, all over the map on this one!

HAS YOUR COLLECTING CHANGED THROUGH THE YEARS?

I’m only approaching 35, come back to me on this one :)

HOW DO YOU SOURCE YOUR COLLECTION?

All over - some I have been fortunate enough to be gifted. My mother in law gifted us a Chagall watercolor/charcoal that I love.

WHICH IS YOU FAVORITE ARTWORK IN HISTORY

My all time favorite is probably Monet. I also love David Yarrow. He has some incredible photography of bison in Montana, a place we have been lucky enough to spend time with friends that have become family.
